SUMMARY:Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation for New Brunswick Agriculture (Climate Change Week)
DESCRIPTION:Cedric MacLeod brings 18-years of agricultural Greenhouse Gas (GHG) management experience to the EOS Ecoenergy Climate Change Week speaker series. This session will focus on the opportunities that lay before the New Brunswick and Atlantic agriculture sectors to reduce its GHG emissions output and outline the challenges that the sector faces in adapting its production models to minimize the impacts of climate change on local food security. Farmers and ranchers are on the front line for climate change impact and food security is the ultimate factor handing in the balance. On 26 February 1937\, the 32nd President of the USA\, President Franklin D Roosevelt\, wrote to all State Governors in the USA. In his letter\, he made the case for effective soil management\, including the powerful phrase: “The nation that destroys its soil destroys itself.” As a classically trained soil science agronomist and educator\, Mr. MacLeod will present a ‘soil first’ perspective on building resilient cropping systems to ensure that our ability to feed ourselves is passed onto the next generation in better shape than how we ourselves inherited it.
