SUMMARY:Service of Lessons and Carols at the Mount Allison Chapel
DESCRIPTION:Once again\, Christmas preparations begin with the Mount Allison University Chapel Advent service. The observance of the season\, in many places\, starts with a service of traditional scripture lessons and carols. This year\, the Lessons and Carols service at the Chapel will take place at 3:00 pm on Sunday\, December 1st. \nThis afternoon service features the singing of the Elliott Chorale\, an SATB chamber choir directed by Dr. Gayle h. Martin\, Associate Professor of Music at Mount Allison. Dr. Martin is University Organist and teacher of organ performance and conducting; she is also director of the Music Department choral ensembles. \nThe Advent Lessons chosen for this service are all New Testament texts\, read by students from the Religious Studies course Introduction to the New Testament\, using a contemporary translation with a traditional feel. They will bring to their reading an enriched understanding of the words and context of the traditional narratives of the announcements of the angels\, the birth of Jesus\, and the visits made by shepherds and wise men. Between the Lessons\, the Elliott Chorale will perform several solos and choruses from Handel’s Messiah\, as well as works by Sweelinck\, Howells\, Lauridsen\, and Guilmant. Familiar congregational carols will also be sung. \nThe service open to everyone\, and the university community and public are invited to come and share in all the joy and wonder of the celebrations of the season in the Chapel. As has become tradition\, donations for the local food bank are welcomed at the entrance to the Chapel.
