DESCRIPTION:You can register at Town Hall\, 31 C Main St.\, or online by clicking here. \nThe Town of Sackville is offering another food handler and food safety certification course on Tuesday\, September 29 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Food handler and food safety certifications are designed for candidates that require certification that meets current health laws passed by the province. Students enrolled in this course will receive training in a variety of different food safe practices including food handling\, storing\, preparing\, sanitation and hygiene. The course will be taught by Foodsafe Atlantic. The cost for the course is $100 + HST for people or businesses from outside of Sackville\, and the Town of Sackville is offering a subsidized rate of $50 + HST to businesses or people who live in the Town. \nPlease note that all necessary precautions for COVID 19 will be in place. SUMMARY:Inside the Ivory Tower Lunch N Learn
DESCRIPTION:Dave Hornidge\, Department of Physics \n  \nExperimental Medium-Energy Subatomic Physics and the Mainz Microtron \nMy research has to do with matter on the smallest scales\, where we examine atomic nuclei\, the protons and neutrons (together nucleons) that make up the nuclei\, and the quarks inside the nucleons.  Our goal is to help describe the theory of the strong nuclear force—the force that olds the nucleus/nucleons/quarks together—in the low-energy region.  Our work is done at an electron accelerator called MAMI (the Mainz Microtron) housed at the Institute for Nuclear Physics on the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz\, Germany.  One of the projects we are currently working on is measuring the scalar and vector polarizabilities of the proton and neutron using Compton scattering experiments.  These quantities are fundamental constants like mass \nand charge\, but are related to the internal structure of the particle in question.

DESCRIPTION:Robert Lapp\, Department of English \nPoetry for the Anthropocene \nIn this talk\, Robert Lapp will describe his research into “ecopoetry\,” or the various kinds of poetry being written in response to the environmental crisis in an era when the impact of humans on the planet that has been dubbed “the Anthropocene.”  Examples will include (among others) Baba Brinkman’s “Rap Guide to Climate Chaos\,” the Dark Mountain project\, and (in a work that illustrates the insights of the new field of biosemiotics)\, Les Murray’s “Translations from the Natural World.”  Poetry is well positioned to play a transformative role in the coming transition from “business as usual” to “climate wilding” because it can leverage the emotional and ethical issues often left out of scientific or economic facts.  It can also deploy the human imagination to think outside the box\, so that in addition to carefully-witnessed “realism\,” sharp satire\, and poignant elegy\, it can offer survival-oriented visionary prophecy\, often mixed with a leaven of dark humour.
