SUMMARY:Film screening\, "Unnatural Landscapes"
DESCRIPTION:Producer and researcher Ron Rudin will screen for the first time his short documentary film (22 minutes in length) and talk about his work on the MMRA. “Unnatural Landscapes” tells the story of the marshlands of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia\, particularly during the period after World War II\, when the Maritime Marshland Rehabilitation Administration (MMRA) was tasked by the federal government to rebuild or replace the region’s dykes and aboiteaux. Building on interviews with individuals with a variety of connections with the marshlands\, the film encourages reflection on what it means for a landscape to be “natural.” \nJoin us at the Anderson Octagonal House\, 29 Queens Rd.\, Sackville\, NB. Admission is free.

SUMMARY:Book Launch\, "Stephen Millidge\, The Surprising Life of a Sackville Loyalist"
DESCRIPTION:The Tantramar Heritage Trust is pleased to announce the launch of a its 34th publication\, “Stephen Millidge – The Surprising Life of a Sackville Loyalist.” by W. Eugene Goodrich. The author will give a 40-50 minute presentation on some aspects of the life of Stephen Millidge followed by questions and the launch of his new book. \nSackville Township had been a British settlement for twenty five years when Loyalist families arrived in the mid 1780s\, However\, those few Loyalists had a profound impact on the future direction of governance that gave shape to people’s lives in this community. Based on a variety of previously uninvestigated original source material\, the author presents a very comprehensive study of Sackville Loyalist Stephen Millidge\, merchant-trader\, storekeeper\, High Sheriff and Deputy Crown Surveyor. The book also offers a surprising amount of new information on the post-Planter settlement history as well as the economic\, legal\, and intellectual life of Sackville Township and Westmorland County. It tells the story\, at times amusing\, always engaging\, and ultimately tragic\, of a convinced Loyalist\, devoted husband and father and contented citizen of Sackville. \nStephen Millidge deserves a much more prominent place in the town’s history than has heretofore been possible to accord him. The Tantramar Heritage Trust is most pleased to include this publication in its listing of historical books. \nLight refreshments will be served. Admission is free and all are welcome.

SUMMARY:Tantramar Heritage Trust AGM
DESCRIPTION:There will be a short business meeting\, followed by presentation of our Volunteer of the Year Award. This year we are delighted to honour Colin MacKinnon for his invaluable contributions to the Trust over many years. \nFollowing the meeting\, we are very pleased to have guest speaker Charlie Scobie give a presentation about his new book\, People of the Tantramar\, which will be published by the Trust in September 2018. The book will feature 47 biographical sketches of people who have lived and worked in the Tantramar area over the centuries. Each entry will have a portrait or photo of the person\, about 800 words of text\, and a photo of something in the community today which has associations with the subject. \nPlanned as a sequel to the best-selling 2013 Sackville Then and Now: New Brunswick’s Oldest Town in Photographs\, the book will have a similar format: hard cover\, glossy paper\, full colour\, and 108 pages. Like the earlier book it will be printed by award-winning Canadian colour printers Friesens of Altona\, Manitoba. The book will sell for $25\, but an advance sales campaign will be launched at the AGM\, when copies of the book can be ordered at a discount price of $22.50. This campaign will continue through the months of June and July. \nLight refreshments will be served and all are welcome. If you are unable to attend\, but would like a copy of our annual report\, please contact Karen at the office either by email at tantramarheritage@gmail.com or by phone at (506) 536-2541.
