SUMMARY:Inside the Ivory Tower - The Quilt Detective: Uncovering women’s histories from the textiles they made
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Lisa Binkley’s work explores the often overlooked histories of women’s domestic life through close examination of the quilts they made. While some of her research relies on quilts found in museum collections across Canada\, the United States\, and part of Europe\, she is interested in the histories of the makers when their quilts are no longer in existence\, having been discarded because they are well worn and thread bare. Dr. Binkley’s talk will consider the significance of the textiles used in making quilts\, the methods of making\, and the importance of considering the place and time in which they were made\, all important clues in recouping the histories of their makers. \nDr. Lisa Binkley is the W.P. Bell Post-doctoral Fellow in the Centre for Canadian Studies at Mount Allison University. Prior to arriving at Mount Allison\, she has taught at Memorial University in Newfoundland and Queen’s University in Kingston\, ON. Aside from her academic interests\, she is interested in all things fibre related including\, knitting\, quilting\, stitching\, hooking\, spinning\, and weaving.
