SUMMARY:Harry Manx in concert - as part of the Fall Festival of Folk Music
DESCRIPTION:THE FALL FESTIVAL OF FOLK MUSIC – This concert is presented as part of the Fall Festival of Folk Music in Sackville NB. The Festival also features Old Man Leudecke on September 18\, Connie Koldor (Trio) on September 26\, and Garnet Rogers on October 25. Old Man Leudeceke is $30\, Garnet is $30\, Connie is $30\, and Harry is $40. Individual tickets can be purchased at www.festivalbythemarsh.com and there are a limited number of series passes available for $115 – to purchase a pass click here. \nAbout Harry Manx \n“Mysticssippi” blues man Harry Manx has been called an “essential link” between the music of East and West\, creating musical short stories that wed the tradition of the Blues with the depth of classical Indian ragas. He has created a unique sound that is hard to forget and deliciously addictive to listen to. \nHarry forged his distinctive style by studying at the feet of the masters\, first as a sound man in the blues clubs of Toronto during his formative years and then under a rigorous tutelage with Vishwa Mohan Bhatt in India. Bhatt is the inventor of the 20-stringed Mohan Veena\, which has become Harry’s signature instrument. \nHarry played slide guitar for many years before meeting Bhatt in Rajasthan\,in fact he had been living in another part of India for many years already\, but he started at the beginning under Bhatt’s tutelage\, unlearning most of what he knew about playing a slide instrument. He learned Eastern scales and eventually ragas\, deceptively complex and regimented musical patterns that form the basis of Indian composition. Learning the voicings of Indian music is a subtle art that comes with time. Harry spent most of twelve years in India learning that. It was later on that Harry decided to explore the connection between Indian ragas and blues scales which eventually led to the Indo-blues hybrid that has become his style. \nBorn on the Isle of Man\, Manx immigrated to Ontario with his parents when he was a child. He started working with bands as a ‘roadie’ at age 15 and gradually worked his way up to becoming the regular sound man at the well-known El Mocambo (blues) club in Toronto. There he worked with a slew of blues legends. Harry admits that blues is still at the heart of much of his work. “I’ve always had one foot in the blues from those days … what I got from those artists is a groove. That’s what I’m particularly interested in is the groove\, and that’s the way I play blues”. “I went to Europe when I was 20 and started making money as a busker\,” recalls Manx. “I’ve worked mostly as a musician since then\, though I did some theatre work for a while. I was a one-man band with a drums and a cymbals for a time too. It was really a lot of fun” \nManx’s time in India has imbued his music with an intangible spiritual quality. “the song reveals who you are\, it’s the vehicle for your message\, your inspirational ideas or your story\,” explained Manx. “Like many people I’m interested in my own development as a person and that’s represented in my songs\, I’m searching for truth through art and spirituality. My songs are a synthesis of everything I’ve absorbed\, all my experiences and I share that. I’m glad that it means something to people.” \n“Indian music moves a person inward\,” he explains. “It’s traditionally used in religious ceremonies and during meditations because it puts you into this whole other place (now\, here). But Western music has the ability to move you outward\, into celebration and dance. There are some ragas that sound bluesy\, and there are ways to bend strings while playing blues that sound Indian. I may be forcing the relationship between the two musical cultures\, but I keep thinking they were made for each other. That leads me to more and more experimentation. The journey has been great so far.” Manx is a prolific artist\, releasing 12 albums in a 12 year span with no signs of stopping. He has received seven Maple Blues Awards\, six Juno nominations\, the Canadian Folk Music Award in 2005 for Best Solo Artist and won CBC Radio’s “Great Canadian Blues Award” in 2007. \nHis most recent original release\, “Om Suite Ohm” was voted by the Montreal daily La Presse as one of only 4 CDs to watch for in 2013. Guitar Player Magazine called it “his most fully realized work to date”. Blend Indian folk melodies with slide guitar blues\, add a sprinkle of gospel and throw in some compelling grooves. It’s a recipe that goes down easy and leaves you hungry for more.

SUMMARY:Garnet Rogers - in concert as part of the Fall Festival of Folk Music
DESCRIPTION:THE FALL FESTIVAL OF FOLK MUSIC – This concert is presented as part of the Fall Festival of Folk Music in Sackville NB. The Festival also features Old Man Leudecke on September 18\, Connie Koldor (Trio) on September 26\, and Harry Manx on November 20. Old Man Leudecke is $30\, Connie is $30\, and Harry is $40. To purchase tickets for individual concerts visit www.festivalbythemarsh.com\, and there are a limited number of series passes available for $115 – to purchase a pass click here. \nAbout Garnet \nIn a darkened bedroom\, lit only by the amber glow from an old floor model radio\, two young brothers aged 6 and 12 lay in their beds\, listening to the country music broadcasts from the Grand Ol’ Opry\, and practiced their harmonies. Two years later\, the youngest one was playing the definitive 8-year-old’s version of “Desolation Row” on his ukulele. He soon abandoned that instrument to teach himself the flute\, violin and guitar. \nWithin ten years\, and barely out of high school\, Garnet Rogers was on the road as a full-time working musician with his older brother Stan. Together they formed what has come to be accepted as one of the most influential acts in North American folk music. \nSince then\, Garnet Rogers has established himself as ‘One of the major talents of our time”. Hailed by the Boston Globe as a “charismatic performer and singer”\, Garnet is a man with a powerful physical presence – close to six and a half feet tall – with a voice to match. With his “smooth\, dark baritone” (Washington Post) his incredible range\, and thoughtful\, dramatic phrasing\, Garnet is widely considered by fans and critics alike to be one of the finest singers anywhere. His music\, like the man himself\, is literate\, passionate\, highly sensitive\, and deeply purposeful. Cinematic in detail\, his songs “give expression to the unspoken vocabulary of the heart” (Kitchener Waterloo Record). An optimist at heart\, Garnet sings extraordinary songs about people who are not obvious heroes and of the small victories of the everyday. As memorable as his songs\, his over-the-top humour and lightning-quick wit moves his audience from tears to laughter and back again. \n“Garnet Rogers is capable of awe-inspiring and unpredictable stuff – and that includes more than just music” \nResolutely independent\, Garnet Rogers has turned down offers from major labels to do his music his own way.

SUMMARY:Live Bait presents the holiday drag cabaret “Jingle Bell of the Ball”
DESCRIPTION:Live Bait Theatre is pleased to present “Jingle Bell of the Ball” for one night only on Saturday\, November 25 at 7:30 pm at the Sackville Legion. \nFor centuries\, we’ve only known her as Santa’s humble wife. But now it’s time for Mrs. Claus to tell her story! \nRuby Claus has always been the true backbone of the North Pole\, but she’s tired of being the unsung hero of the holidays. This year\, she’s letting Santa and the elves fend for themselves as she steps into the spotlight in a glamorous night of music and comedy starring the true Queen of Christmas: Mrs. Claus! \nRecommended for audiences of 13-years-old and up. \n_________________________________________________________ \nCreated by and starring CJ Norris. CJ’s previous work won him the Fan Favourite Award at the 2021 Fundy Fringe\, for his solo drag musical Flyin’ Solo! \, which made a stop in Sackville last year.CJ is a Moncton-based musical theatre artist who’s appeared on local stages as LeFou in Beauty and the Beast\, Jinx in Forever Plaid\, and the ensembles of Mary Poppins and The Wizard of Oz\, just to name a few. This holiday season\, he brings you another one-of-a-kind interactive ‘dragsical’! \nTickets: Are available here online or by calling (506) 536-2248.

SUMMARY:Fruit Machine - by Solo Chicken Productions - in Sackville
DESCRIPTION:Fruit Machine is an original physical theatre performance created and directed by Alex Rioux in partnership with Solo Chicken Productions.\nThe 1960s saw the Royal Canadian Mounted Police double down on their already aggressive campaign to eliminate homosexuals from the civil service. Driven by cold war induced paranoia of security risks the RCMP pointed their attention at the queer communities for their perceived “character weaknesses”. Taking historical text\, real-life accounts\, poetry\, and movement Fruit Machine tells the story of hundreds through the bodies of four.\n\nFruit Machine\, the debut creation from director Alex Rioux in collaboration with Solo Chicken Production\, is both a haunting look at the harm paranoia-driven policy can do to vulnerable communities\, and a memorial to the brave and powerful queer individuals who resisted an insidious\, dehumanizing security campaign.\n\nFor ticket information visit www.livebaittheatre.com/tickets\n\nThere is also a FREE physical theatre workshop for any interested folks who identify as 2SLGBTQIA+ in Sackville 5:00PM-6:00PM on August 3. TO LEARN MORE OR TO BOOK A SPACE IN THE WORKSHOP visit www.solochickenproductions.com/fruit-machine

SUMMARY:Mali Obomsawin in concert (jazz)
DESCRIPTION:Tickets are available by clicking here\, by calling (506) 940-2248\, or visiting 62 Main St (in the back building) Tuesday to Friday 12 noon to 4 pm\n\nMALI OBOMSAWIN (they/she) is an award winning bassist\, songwriter and composer from Abenaki First Nation at Odanak. With an expansive background in American roots\, rock\, and jazz\, Obomsawin carries several music traditions. Mali’s debut album Sweet Tooth has received international acclaim since its release (Out of Your Head Records 2022)\, including rave reviews and “best of 2022” placement in The Guardian\, JazzTimes\, and NPR. A Smithsonian Folkways Recordings artist\, they spent the years 2014-2021 touring internationally with beloved folk-rock band Lula Wiles. An in-demand bassist in the folk and jazz circuits\, Mali appears often as an accompanist with contemporaries like Jake Blount and Lizzie No\, and has performed at premier festivals like Newport and Philly Folk Fest. She can also be found in galleries and creative music spaces with the likes of Peter Apfelbaum\, Taylor Ho Bynum\, and Bill Cole’s Untempered Ensemble. In addition to their artistic work\, Obomsawin is a community organizer dedicated to land justice and tribal sovereignty.\nMali received the 2022 International Folk Music Association’s “Rising Tide Award\,” which honors young artists who embody the values and ideals of the folk community through their creative work\, community role\, and public voice. They also received the New England Foundation of the Arts’ “New Work New England” award in 2022. Mali is a member of The Julia Keefe Indigenous Big Band and Indigenous Performance Productions’ Welcome To Indian Country. As a composer-arranger\, they scored the upcoming film “We Are The Warriors\,” collaborated with Red Sky Performance and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra\, and Palaver Strings. Beyond the stage Mali is a community organizer and advocate for Indigenous rights\, environmental justice and landback. She works as a writer and educator with the Wabanaki-led Sunlight Media Collective to document and promote stories at the intersection of environmental justice and Tribal sovereignty. Her journalism has been published recently in Smithsonian\, National Performance Network\, and the Boston Globe. In 2020\, Mali co-founded Bomazeen Land Trust\, the first ever Wabanaki land trust\, where she currently serves as executive director.\n\nAbout Sweet Tooth:\n\nA suite for Indigenous resistance\, the new album from Wabanaki bassist\, composer\, and songwriter Mali Obomsawin flies in the face of Western tropes that insist Indigenous cultures are monolithic\, trapped in time. Instead\, Obomsawin highlights centuries of clever adaptation and resistance that have fueled the art and culture of Wabanaki people.

SUMMARY:Whiskey Jack presents Stories and Songs of Stompin' Tom - May 5 at the Sackville Legion
DESCRIPTION:Stompin’ Tom became a fan of Whiskey Jack during their tenure as regulars on the CBC’s Tommy Hunter Show. Each week\, Tom would join millions of his fellow Canadians and watch them sing\, play and laugh on their own segment\, “The Old Back Porch”. This is a show that will entertain fans of all musical genres. We guarantee everyone will leave the theatre with a smile on their face and a spring to their step.”\n\n \n\nFremlin is also the author of the best selling book\, “My Good Times with Stompin’ Tom” They invite you to join them and sing and dance to these classic songs….in a Legion in the Maritimes no less!
