SUMMARY:DO THE RIGHT THING (1989)
DESCRIPTION:In DO THE RIGHT THING\, director Spike Lee provides a raw\, unblinking dissection of American racial politics at the close of the 1980s\, with Reagan’s America\, and its avowedly white supremacist ideology\, at the peak of its power. \nOn a blistering hot day in the majority-black Bedford–Stuyvesant neighbourhood of Brooklyn\, racial tensions reach a boiling point when members of the African-American community insist that pizza-owner and Italian-American Sal (Danny Aiello)\, as well as his virulently racist son Pino (John Turturro)\, do more to honour Black celebrities on the walls of their pizzeria\, which feature only photos of famous Italian Americans. As the confrontation escalates\, long-simmering racial grudges erupt into deadly violence. \nLee reaches back to his own experience as a black native of New York as well to his encyclopedic knowledge of cinema to create a film with both deep substance and arresting style. With its incendiary take on the fraught state of American race relations\, DO THE RIGHT THING remains as relevant and urgent as ever.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: THE THIRD MAN (1949)
DESCRIPTION:Carol Reed’s THE THIRD MAN is an exquisitely written and deftly directed thriller about friendship\, loyalty\, and betrayal. \nAmidst the rubble of post-World War II Allied-occupied Vienna\, Holly Martins (Joseph Cotten) arrives from America at the promise of a job from his friend Harry Lime (Orson Welles)\, unaware that Lime was recently killed. Unsatisfied with the explanation he receives\, Martins stays in Vienna to investigate Lime’s death\, risking his life in uncovering a truly evil conspiracy\, while also becoming infatuated with Lime’s girlfriend\, Anna Schmidt (Alida Valli). \nTHE THIRD MAN is famous for its striking\, German-Expressionist cinematography\, its liberal use of dutch-angled compositions\, its humour\, its imaginative use of Vienna’s post-War ruins\, and its jaw-dropping twists and turns\, which come fast and furious. Voted the greatest British film of all time by the British Film Institute\, THE THIRD MAN is enthralling cinema.

SUMMARY:Celebrating 130 Years of Art at the Owens Art Gallery
DESCRIPTION:On May 28\, 2025\, the Owens Art Gallery turns 130! Since\, for reasons we shall not mention\, we missed our quasquicentennial in 2020\, please join us this year to celebrate 130 years of the Owens as a place for connecting with art and artists. \nSince its official opening on May 28\, 1895\, the Owens has played a central role in the cultural life of Mount Allison University and is the oldest university art gallery in Canada. The gallery was originally built to accommodate the teaching of fine arts at the Mount Allison Ladies’ College and to house a collection of approximately 300 works of art and statuary acquired by Mount Allison in 1893. The collection has now grown to about 4\,000 works spanning the 19th\, 20th\, and 21st centuries. \nToday\, the Owens serves as the university art gallery for Mount Allison University and the public art gallery and museum for the Municipality of Tantramar. The Gallery has a long association with the education of women artists and continues to explore this important history through its exhibitions\, research\, publishing\, education and community outreach\, and the development of the Collection. As a teaching museum\, it is also a training ground for the next generation of museum professionals in Canada. \nTo mark this important milestone\, come enjoy a slice of cake and immerse yourself in two new exhibitions—the famous Salon Hanging and Jon Sasaki: Homage—as we celebrate our past and look forward to our future!

SUMMARY:Film Screening: HAROLD AND MAUDE (1971)
DESCRIPTION:Finding the right words to describe HAROLD AND MAUDE is no easy task. Subversive\, romantic\, provocative\, heart-felt\, humorous\, devastating\, charming\, riotous—HAROLD AND MAUDE is all of these and more. \nHarold (Bud Cort)\, a young man obsessed with death\, meets Maude (Ruth Gordon)\, an elderly woman obsessed with life. What follows is perhaps the strangest\, yet most touching romance to ever light up the silver screen. \nDirector Hal Ashby shows a remarkably deft hand with such unusual material\, neither idealizing nor overdoing the sentimentality. Although the film initially left viewers puzzled\, it eventually earned a dedicated cult following and now is routinely cited as one of greatest romantic comedies of all time.

SUMMARY:Slow Art Study Break
DESCRIPTION:Slow Art Study Break\nChill\, snack\, linger with art\nSaturday 5 April\n1:00-4:00 pm\nOwens Art Gallery \nWe’re slowing things down this Saturday\, pulling out our bean bag chairs\, setting out snacks\, and seeing what happens when we linger with art. \nCoinciding with the end of classes and the beginning of exams\, this Slow Art Day event is your antidote to the whirlwind of the end of term. \nAt the heart of this event is a brand-new collection of Museum Zines created by Mount Allison students for Mount Allison students that explore various facets of museum experience. Through personal perspectives\, research\, writing\, and creative prompts\, these zines invite you to slow down and engage with the physical space of the gallery and artworks on view. Considering themes of access\, accessibility\, welcome\, belonging and slowness this collection sparks questions and creates space for reflection. \nThe Museum Zine collection was created by students in MUSE 3301\, Museums\, Education and Engagement\, a Museum and Curatorial Studies course taught by Lucy MacDonald\, Curator of Education and Community Outreach. Over the term\, students made almost weekly visits to the Owens as they considered the many factors that shape museum experience. Central to these conversations were ideas of access and accessibility. The students of MUSE 3301 are Alex Allen\, Aynsley Atkinson\, Bennett Beaumont\, Soojeong Chung\, Grace Farella\, Jane Gurney\, Theodore Harris\, Megan Land\, Ai Nakatsuka\, Jacob Puffer\, Bronwen Ramsey-Brimberg\, Jenna Rogers\, and Louisa Thurler. \nSlow Art Study Break is designed for Mount Allison students during the exam period to highlight the importance of art in wellbeing. \nBring a friend or come on your own and stay awhile. Treat yourself to an espresso or cup of tea\, a sweet or salty snack\, and take time with art. \nSlow Art Day is a global initiative with a simple mission: Help more people discover for themselves the joy of looking at and loving art. \n#slowens \nLearn more @ owensartgallery.com/owens/slow-art-study-break/

SUMMARY:Film Screening: HARAKIRI (1963)
DESCRIPTION:A mesmerizing\, often brutal\, but thoroughly engaging film\, HARAKIRI manages to elevate the usually pulpy Japanese chambara or samurai genre into something approaching high art. \nSet during the Edo era\, a period of unprecedented peace in Japan that saw the mighty samurai class decimated and many of its members reduced to masterless ronin\, former samurai Hanshirō Tsugumo (Tatsuya Nakadai) requests to commit seppuku\, or harakiri\, within the manor of a local feudal lord\, using the opportunity to make a case for the hypocrisies and injustices of a corrupt class system. \nRenowned director Masaki Kobayashi’s elegant and austere style perfectly suits the material. Meanwhile\, Japanese star Tatsuya Nakadai delivers a searing and unforgettable performance. Awarded the Special Jury prize by the prestigious Cannes Film Festival\, HARAKIRI is riveting cinema

SUMMARY:Film Screening: THE SPANISH PRISONER (1997)
DESCRIPTION:The Spanish Prisoner is a stylish\, twisty\, paranoid\, and dizzyingly complex confidence-game thriller from acclaimed writer-director David Mamet. \nJoe (Campbell Scott) has invented a never-explained financialization instrument or “process” that will reap untold riches for his corporate bosses. Although feeling increasingly vulnerable as the naive junior partner\, Joe fantasizes about joining the ranks of the ultra wealthy. Meanwhile\, he strikes up a friendship with rich\, worldly\, and cooly confident Jimmy (Steve Martin)\, who mentors Joe on the finer points of living it large. Pretty soon\, a high stakes game of corporate espionage develops that puts Joe’s very life on the line. \nWith dialogue written in that staccato\, jittery style known as “Mamet-speak\,” The Spanish Prisoner delivers a suspense plot worthy of Hitchcock\, fully earning its many twists and turns. Keeping the audience guessing throughout\, The Spanish Prisoner is utterly absorbing from start to finish.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: WINTER KEPT US WARM (1965)
DESCRIPTION:Filmed in 1965 by a group of students on a shoestring budget\, Winter Kept Us Warm is Canada’s first film about a gay romance. Directed by David Sector\, a 22-year-old English major with no filmmaking experience\, the film was an unexpected smash\, scoring attention from big name critics and a spot at the Cannes Film Festival. Sixty years after its release\, Winter offers a uniquely heart wrenching portrait of queer attraction when being gay was still a crime in Canada.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: LOCAL HERO (1983)
DESCRIPTION:Local Hero is perhaps the finest cinematic character study not of a specific person but of an entire village and the languorous way of life it nourishes\, a town so stubbornly timeless\, it turns out\, that it can survive even the predatory attention of capitalist forces. \nCareer-driven “Mac” MacIntyre is sent by the oil company who employs him to remote Ferness\, a Scottish village that time forgot\, to negotiate a purchase of all the property in order to have the village replaced by a large refinery. The subtle charms of Ferness\, however\, eventually overwhelm Mac\, and he begins to question his complicity in the destructive scheme. \nBill Forsyth’s deft direction strikes the perfect balance between humorous fairy tale and urgent social drama\, achieving an effect that verges on magical realism. Romantic\, funny\, substantive\, subversive — Local Hero will have you convinced that a better world is not only possible but inevitable.

SUMMARY:MAKER MAKER: Pom-Poms with Marit Munson
DESCRIPTION:MAKER MAKER: Pom-Poms with Marit Munson\nWednesday 8 January 2025\n7:00 – 9:00 pm \nMAKER MAKER returns with the perfect cozy craft for the darkest days of winter. Join us to play with colour and make pom-poms with Sackville yarn dyer extraordinaire\, Marit Munson. With just a simple cardboard template\, and your choice of two\, three\, four or more strands of yarn\, learn to make your own one-of-a-kind wooly creations. \nWhether you go bright and bold or soft and subtle\, your pom-poms are certain to bring joy. \nPart colour fiend\, part hypothesis muppet\, Marit Munson learned to dye yarn in 2012 and immediately began asking “What would happen if…?” Her unique dye processes make space for serendipity and play as she creates lively colour on high quality\, natural fibre yarn. A new member of the Canadian Wool Collective\, Marit is a huge fan of the practical\, ecological\, and aesthetic qualities of a good sheepy wool yarn. Most recently\, she’s been a helping hand at sheep shearing at a regenerative farm in Nova Scotia\, buying fleeces and working with spinning mills to introduce several new 100% Canadian yarns that are soft and springy and full of character. \nMAKER MAKER is a monthly program of seriously small after-hours art workshops. Led by diverse Maker Mentors\, each workshop introduces a pocket-sized art project that can be made in two hours or less. Designed for accomplished and aspiring makers alike\, MAKER MAKER is for anyone interested in making small things by hand with friends and fellow makers. This informal workshop series explores how working small can be practical\, portable and playful\, economical\, sharable and even wearable. \nMAKER MAKER is free\, all materials are provided\, and no registration required. Yarn for this workshop has been generously donated by fabulous community members. This program is made possible thanks to funding from The Rotary Club of Sackville\, the Municipality of Tantramar\, and the New Brunswick Department of Tourism\, Heritage and Culture. \nLearn more @ https://owensartgallery.com/owens/maker-maker/\nFind detailed access information @ www.owensartgallery.com/accessibility

SUMMARY:Film Screening: THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER (1940)
DESCRIPTION:Director Ernst Lubitsch provides a masterclass in how to make a romantic comedy in the endlessly charming The Shop Around the Corner. Co-workers Alfred (James Stewart)and Klara (Margaret Sullavan) openly despise each other. Unbeknownst to the pair\, however\, is that they are actually carrying on a tender romance through the mail in the form of anonymously written letters. Revelations\, misunderstandings\, and general bedlam ensues. The Shop Around the Corner is an excellent showcase for the “Lubitsch touch\,” the supremely deft and tasteful handling of the romantic comedy conventions for which the director was renowned.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: THE PIANO (1993)
DESCRIPTION:Masterfully directed by Jane Campion\, the first woman to win the coveted Palme D’Or (for this film)\, The Piano is a searing romantic drama that doubles as a powerful statement about feminine self-realization in the context of patriarchal structures of control. \nIn 19th century New Zealand\, spirited Ada (Holly Hunter) finds herself forced into marrying self-interested and boorish Alisdair (Sam Neill)\, who callously discards her beloved piano. Alisdair’s neighbour\, George (Harvey Keitel)\, restores the piano to Ada and wins her heart. Things come to a violent resolution once Alisdair discovers the affair. \nThe Piano is that rarest of creatures\, an acclaimed arthouse film that was also a box-office smash. Its popular appeal is easy enough to see: a gripping story tinged with erotic heat set in a lush\, exotic landscape. Simply breathtaking.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: In the Mood for Love (2000)
DESCRIPTION:There is something wonderfully ironic about a film so lush and sensual\, almost erotically so\, that is also\, at the same time\, easily the finest work about carnal restraint and unconsummated passion ever made. \nIn 1960s Hong Kong\, Chow (Tony Leung) and Su (Maggie Cheung)\, neighbours in a crowded apartment complex\, learn that their respective spouses are having an affair. Although palpably attracted to each other\, Chow and Su struggle to submit to their desires in a society where propriety is of utmost concern. \nDirector Wong Kar-wai\, with help from celebrated cinematographer Christopher Doyle and his two luminous leads\, elevates otherwise commonplace themes of love and betrayal into one of cinema’s most visually striking and profoundly evocative films.

SUMMARY:Casablanca
DESCRIPTION:Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman light up the screen in this tautly directed and endlessly quotable World War II romantic thriller. \nIn neutral Casablanca\, cynical\, embittered\, and self-absorbed American expat Rick (Bogart) wants only to profit from the war\, willingly serving both Allied sympathizers and Nazi officers in his popular cafe. Rick’s isolationism is tested when Ilsa (Bergman)\, an old flame\, shows up seeking Rick’s help in saving her husband Victor\, a formidable resistance fighter\, from the Nazis by getting him out of the country. \nShould Rick sacrifice Victor for a chance to reunite with the woman he loves? Or should he help Ilsa and her husband escape together in the interest of the greater good? \nA highly topical film\, Casablanca was released at the height of World War II and takes its anti-fascist politics seriously. It is also one of the most superbly crafted films of all time\, regularly showing up on best-of lists. \nPerfectly cast\, beautifully photographed\, and sharply edited\, Casablanca remains exemplary of the kind of high-quality films made by Hollywood’s during its vaunted studio era.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: North by Northwest (1959)
DESCRIPTION:Alfred Hitchcock’s 1959 spy thriller North by Northwest is a wonderfully lighthearted cocktail of action\, comedy\, romance\, intrigue\, and suspense. Advertising executive (and committed bachelor) Roger Thornhill\, played by the effortlessly charming and impeccably dressed Cary Grant\, is mistaken for a secret agent in possession of government secrets worth killing for. Aided by the enchanting Eve Kendall\, played by luminous Eva Marie Saint\, Thornhill attempts to clear his name while fending off his dastardly pursuers. \nNorth by Northwest is such a distillation of Hitchcockian cinema that it verges on self-parody. Bursting with confidence and style\, North by Northwest is recognized as one of the most visually iconic films of all time. All pretence to narrative logic is summarily dropped in favour of staging one dazzling set-piece after another\, crowned by a tour-de-force sequence atop Mount Rushmore. Hitchcock was at the height of his powers as a director here\, and it shows.
