SUMMARY:Online Panel Discussion: Hidden Blackness
DESCRIPTION:March 26\, 2025 @ 7:30 pm ADT\nThis is a free event and open to the public\nASL and live automatic captions will be available\nRegistration is required: https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_Ls4ruT7eQ9WPSt2uL3AfSQ#/registration \nJoin panellists Mary McCarthy Brandt\, Thandiwe McCarthy\, Aleya Michaud\, Havey Amani Whitfield\, and David Woods for a riveting conversation about the long history of Black communities in the Maritime Provinces. This panel discussion is organized in conjunction with Hidden Blackness: Edward Mitchell Bannister (1828-1901)\, the first major exhibition of the artist’s work ever presented in Canada. Born in Saint Andrews\, New Brunswick\, Bannister was a self-taught\, nineteenth-century\, African American/Canadian painter of the Barbizon school known for pastoral landscapes and seascapes. In 1876\, Bannister’s painting Under the Oaks (now lost) won the bronze medal (first place) at the Centennial Exposition Art Exhibition in Philadelphia\, thus making him the first artist of African descent and the first Canadian to win a major art prize in North America. \nHidden Blackness: Edward Mitchell Bannister (1828-1901) is organized and circulated by the Owens Art Gallery\, Mount Allison University\, and the Black Artists Network of Nova Scotia (BANNS). SUMMARY:No Place\, Nowhere: Online Screening
DESCRIPTION:Online via Zoom — Register to Attend @ https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZAsfuCprjgvE9UTTE4ftnb9tvzUE3FNPCK9 \nJoin us for an online screening of the videos included in the exhibition No Place\, Nowhere\, curated by Jack Symonds\, Colville House Curatorial Intern. \nAt the centre of No Place\, Nowhere\, lies the question of place and no place. These works present depictions of the everyday that invite us to consider these realities and create connections between art and place. \nFollowing the live online screening\, the three videos will continue to be available online for one week\, until 14 April. \nProgram \nPenny McCann\nMarshlands\, 2000\nSuper 8\, 16 mm\, video\, 7:06 min \nA psychic’s prediction of impending disaster underlies this experimental meditation set on the marshes of Sackville\, New Brunswick (Canada). Shot on Super 8\, 16mm and video\, Marshlands moves elliptically from a present steeped in memory to an uncertain future. \nJim MacSwain\nNova Scotia Tourist Industries\, 1998\n16mm transferred to video\, 12 min. Courtesy of the Artist \nThe competition for tourist dollars is desperate! There has to be a new spin on how to entice tourists to the poverty-stricken province of Nova Scotia. This film animation develops a landscape that any death wish would appreciate. \nColin Campbell\nDishevelled Destiny\, 1999-2000\nvideo\, 29 min\nCollection of the Owens Art Gallery\nCommissioned with support from the Canada Council for the Arts Millennium Arts Fund\, the Marjorie Young Bell Fine Arts and Music Fund\, and the New Brunswick Department of Tourism\, Heritage and Culture \nDishevelled Destiny is an affectionate glance back through the often irreverent and amusing stories that populate Sackville’s colourful art history. \nArt Star\, who left under a cloud has returned twenty-five years later to discover his artistic legacy collecting dust in the vault of the Owens Art Gallery. Although Art Star and Colleeta Sackville-West\, unofficial historian of the Tantramar\, don’t meet\, Colleeta has plenty to say about Art Star. The tape ends at the beginning of the millennium\, with the Tantramar Marsh (Tantrum\, for short) brooding menacingly about her future. \nCART Transcription will be available at this event. \nRegister to Attend @ https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZAsfuCprjgvE9UTTE4ftnb9tvzUE3FNPCK9 \nThis screening was made possible thanks to the generous support of Mount Allison University alumni Heather and Ian Bourne and the Department of Canadian Heritage (Young Canada Works at Building Careers in Heritage).

The title of the exhibition comes from “Poem 10\,” by Mi’kmaw poet Rita Joe\, in which she expresses a desire for the reader to reject colonial understandings of historical records and monuments and emphasizes the importance of holding reverence for the lands and waters that connect us throughout Mi’kma’ki and Wabanaki Territory. Using photography\, installation\, beadwork\, sound\, and poetry\, the artists generate counter-cartographic narratives that honour the kinships and knowledge systems held within these waterways that sustain us. \nFor more information about the exhibition and artists\, click here.

SUMMARY:Compost with Worms
DESCRIPTION:Attend an engaging panel on Zoom and hear from 3 folks who have experience composting with worms. \nJohn Castell had his first introduction to vermiculture during a 1 month Master Composter course that he took almost 20 years ago. Since then he has been involved giving composting presentations to corporate Lunch and Learns\, garden clubs\, Community Garden groups\, the Fall Fair at Ganong Nature Park near St. Stephen\, school classroom presentations from primary through to high schools in several municipalities\, and at demonstrations for the University of Florida Horticulture programs. He and his wife have been using vermiculture to convert kitchen scraps to compost (worm castings) for about 16 years. He says the “nice thing about vermiculture is that you can keep it in the kitchen handy for feeding food scraps to the worms. Done properly\, there is no bad odor. The worms convert wast food into on of the best composts available.” \nWe will also hear from Michael Freeman who is excited to share his methods\, take questions\, compare with other compost aficionados and neophytes. \nOur third guest is Michelle Strain\, who is the Administrative Director at Mount Allison University. Compost is her favourite topic\, and says that “making good compost from food waste is a wonderful way to use that resource that might normally not be composted to go back on the land. There is too much food waste on our planet for sure! My own household food waste goes into a bin for my worm pets to eat.” \nRegister in advance for this meeting:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZAtd-2orDMrGt37QPVuZg4iqKULvMPJ8_Qk \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.
