SUMMARY:Celebrating 130 Years of Art at the Owens Art Gallery
DESCRIPTION:On May 28\, 2025\, the Owens Art Gallery turns 130! Since\, for reasons we shall not mention\, we missed our quasquicentennial in 2020\, please join us this year to celebrate 130 years of the Owens as a place for connecting with art and artists. \nSince its official opening on May 28\, 1895\, the Owens has played a central role in the cultural life of Mount Allison University and is the oldest university art gallery in Canada. The gallery was originally built to accommodate the teaching of fine arts at the Mount Allison Ladies’ College and to house a collection of approximately 300 works of art and statuary acquired by Mount Allison in 1893. The collection has now grown to about 4\,000 works spanning the 19th\, 20th\, and 21st centuries. \nToday\, the Owens serves as the university art gallery for Mount Allison University and the public art gallery and museum for the Municipality of Tantramar. The Gallery has a long association with the education of women artists and continues to explore this important history through its exhibitions\, research\, publishing\, education and community outreach\, and the development of the Collection. As a teaching museum\, it is also a training ground for the next generation of museum professionals in Canada. \nTo mark this important milestone\, come enjoy a slice of cake and immerse yourself in two new exhibitions—the famous Salon Hanging and Jon Sasaki: Homage—as we celebrate our past and look forward to our future!

SUMMARY:Book Launch & Reading with TRC Commissioner\, Marie Wilson
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an author reading and the launch of North of Nowhere: Song of a Truth and Reconciliation Commissioner\, written by Marie Wilson. May 29\, 7pm\, Windsor Grand Room (main floor of Windsor Hall\, Mount Allison University campus). \nAll welcome! \nThis event is sponsored by the Centre for Indigenous and Critical Canadian Studies at MtA and the Maritime Region United Church Justice\, Outreach and Mission Committee. \nCopies of the book will be available for purchase and signing at the event. \nAbout North of Nowhere (from the publisher’s website): The incomparable first-hand account of the historic Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada told by one of the commissioners who led it. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission was established to record the previously hidden history of more than a century of forced residential schooling for Indigenous children. Marie Wilson helped lead that work as one of just three commissioners. With the skills of a journalist\, the heart of a mother and grandmother\, and the insights of a life as the spouse of a residential school survivor\, Commissioner Wilson guides readers through her years witnessing survivor testimony across the country\, providing her unique perspective on the personal toll and enduring public value of the commission. In this unparalleled account\, she honours the voices of survivors who have called Canada to attention\, determined to heal\, reclaim\, and thrive. Part vital public documentary\, part probing memoir\, North of Nowhere breathes fresh air into the possibilities of reconciliation amid the persistent legacy of residential schools. It is a call to everyone to view the important and continuing work of reconciliation not as an obligation but as a gift. \nFor more information\, see: https://houseofanansi.com/products/north-of-nowhere?srsltid=AfmBOopX7IrEJR1WeSy4mwTw_39TK1NxoPwIeebRdkw7bnkvhl8p4UQj
