July 6, 2023“The Importance of Romance” in presented as part of Festival by the Marsh which runs July 5 – 26 and includes: more plays; Mali Obomsawin in concert; workshops in fine arts, theatre and writing; an artist in residence; and more!
“The Importance of Romance” brings together two charming one-act comedies – “The Romancers” by Edmond Rostand, and “The Importance of the House Beautiful” by Ron Kelly Spurles, The plays are both set in the late 1800s and feature more than 15 performers in period costume. “The Romancers” is an entertaining play complete with sword fights that is inspired by “Romeo and Juliet” – but with a twist! “The Importance of the House Beautiful” is a clever comedy based on an actual real-life visit to Moncton by Oscar Wilde in 1882. As the character Mikey says, it recounts :what could have happened, but most likely didn’t, on that day”.
The plays run Wednesday to Saturday, July 5 -8 at 7 pm at Fort Beausejour/Fort Cumberland NHS (outdoors). Performances are pay what you can, and we recommend you bring bug spray and dress for the weather.
