SUMMARY:Colloquium Musicum: Introducing the SUMR Time Lab
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Alan Dodson presents a paper authored by himself and students Anna Gagné\, Anna Gordon\, and Kiran Steele. How can we represent the rhythm in a recording that lacks a clear and regular meter? We worked on this problem collaboratively in the summer of 2023 through a series of case studies on solo recordings from around the world: a “farewell song” from Korea\, an adhan (Islamic call to prayer) from Tanzania\, two African American field hollers from the Deep South\, and a “love song for flute” from the Meskwaki Nation in Tama\, Iowa. In this presentation\, we demonstrate a new approach to visual representation that combines staff notation\, analytical animations\, and audio. This colloquium is an expanded version of a presentation we gave at the Eighth International Conference on Analytical Approaches to World Music in June 2024. \nAdmission is free; all are welcome to attend. For more information call 506-364-2374 or email music@mta.ca. See our full calendar of events at mta.ca/music.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: LOCAL HERO (1983)
DESCRIPTION:Local Hero is perhaps the finest cinematic character study not of a specific person but of an entire village and the languorous way of life it nourishes\, a town so stubbornly timeless\, it turns out\, that it can survive even the predatory attention of capitalist forces. \nCareer-driven “Mac” MacIntyre is sent by the oil company who employs him to remote Ferness\, a Scottish village that time forgot\, to negotiate a purchase of all the property in order to have the village replaced by a large refinery. The subtle charms of Ferness\, however\, eventually overwhelm Mac\, and he begins to question his complicity in the destructive scheme. \nBill Forsyth’s deft direction strikes the perfect balance between humorous fairy tale and urgent social drama\, achieving an effect that verges on magical realism. Romantic\, funny\, substantive\, subversive — Local Hero will have you convinced that a better world is not only possible but inevitable.
