SUMMARY:MtA Music Colloquium: Liberatory Praxis in Operatic Rehearsal Processes
DESCRIPTION:Opera unfolds within a hierarchical and oftentimes rigid structural apparatus that leaves musicians grappling with how to reshape current paradigms and methodologies of opera creation. In this Independent Student Research Project\, generously funded by the J.E.A. Crake Foundation\, Emma Yee employs a research–creation methodology to explore and identify ways of granting agency to singers within opera rehearsals that upend and re-imagine traditional practices. \nThis event is free and all are welcome to attend. SUMMARY:Sunset Boulevard (1950)
DESCRIPTION:There is something ironic in the fact that Sunset Blvd. was released just as Hollywood cinema’s dominance as a popular art form was cresting in the early 1950s\, for the film seethes with gleeful contempt for the very industry that made it. Despite biting the hand that feeds it\, Sunset Blvd. was a smash hit\, both critically and commercially\, and continues to be regarded as the high point of mid-century Hollywood cinema. \nNorma Desmond (Gloria Swanson) plays a long-forgotten movie star who ensnares unsuspecting Joe Gillis (William Holden)\, a struggling Hollywood screenwriter\, into her deluded fantasy of making a glorious return to the silver screen. As her fantasy slips away and the reality of her inevitable obsolescence slowly sets in\, Norma descends further and further into madness\, with results that\, while tragic\, are also surprisingly touching. \nDirector Billy Wilder leavens his razor-sharp barbs at Hollywood with bracing wit and acid comedy. This is a film\, after all\, hilariously narrated by a dead man. Lead actress Gloria Swanson\, all high drama and seductive menace\, delivers one of the most impressive performances in all of cinema. This film\, about Hollywood at its worst\, also happens to represent Hollywood at its best.

SUMMARY:MtA Music Colloquium: Mozart’s Music of Friends
DESCRIPTION:In 1829\, Goethe famously described the string quartet as a “conversation among four intelligent people.” Inspired by this metaphor\, Dr. Edward Klorman (McGill University) draws from historical evidence about musical salons and from musical analysis to explore social interplay in Mozart’s chamber music. This presentation develops an analytical concept called “multiple agency” that interprets the various players within an ensemble as participants in stylized social discourse – characters who are capable of surprising\, seducing\, outwitting\, and even deceiving one another musically\, and whose interactions are animated in performance. \nThis event is free and all are welcome to attend.
